Step 1: build an audience

Before you can make a penny off your Youtube videos, the first thing you’re going to need is an audience.

If you already have a huge following on Youtube, you can skip this step.

To build up your audience, you need to make and publish videos that people really like. You need to do this consistently too, that’s really important.

Youtube has a set of community guidelines that should always be followed. Make sure that you familiarise yourself with these rules and that your videos don’t breach any policies.

If you want your audience to grow, be passionate about your content.

There’s absolutely no point whatsoever in posting Youtube videos about a subject you are not totally psyched about. The best performing videos are made by creators who love what they do.

Besides, viewers will always be able to tell if you’re not into it.

Once you have built up a dedicated audience of regular viewers, you can start to explore the multiple ways to generate revenue on YouTube.

Step 2: sign up for the YouTube partner program.

Once you have 1000 subscribers and you have clocked up at least 4000 hours of watch time (over a 12 month period) you will be eligible to apply for the Youtube partner programme (YPP).

Basically, when you apply to the YPP you are asking YouTube to assess your channel and decide whether it’s monetization- ready.

Signing up is a simple four-step process:

  • First – Read and agree to the terms and conditions. You’ll find them in the YouTube Studio under monetization.
  • Next – Sign up for AdSense. You can either create a new account or connect an existing one to your channel.
  • Then – Set your monetization preferences. You’ll need to choose what type of adds you wants to run on your videos. These can be changed at a later date if necessary.
  • Finally – Wait for the result of your review. YouTube will check your channel activity a
  • and get back to you as soon as they can so be patient!

Step 3: Familiarise yourself with all the ways you can make money on Youtube.

There’s more than one way to make money off your YouTube channel.

In fact, there are six.

They are:

  1. Advertising.
  2. Channel memberships.
  3. Merchandising.
  4. Super chat.
  5. Brand deals.
  6. YouTube premium.

I would suggest spending some time looking into each one of these 6 main strategies and perhaps combining 2 or 3 of them for maximum results.

Allowing advertising on your videos is a great way to earn money. However, be aware that in order to make money, your viewers will need to either click on the add or else watch it for 30 seconds.

If you want to go ahead with an ad-based monetization strategy, make sure that you maximize your chances by enabling ads on all future content as your default setting when you first enable monetisation.

There are also special advertiser-friendly content guidelines, so be sure to check those out too. Don’t worry too much if one of your videos don’t meet the requirements though, as you can always turn off the advertising option on individual videos.

You may also want to consider how you might use targeting tools to your advantage. There are lots of great tools out there that can help you to hone in on your target market.

Good luck!
