How To Change Spotify Username and Display Name

You can’t change your Spotify username. Spotify doesn’t offer the option anywhere in the app or on the web, because the username is the fixed ID that identifies your account behind the scenes. What you can change is your display name, which is the name people actually see on your profile and playlists, and it takes less than a minute.

For most people, the display name is the one they really want to change anyway. The random string they spot in a profile link or in account settings is the username, and it never appears on your profile once a display name is set. If you want your Spotify account to look or work differently, these are the things you can change instead:

• Your display name, as often as you like, from the app or the desktop.
• Your profile picture, from the same edit screen as the name.
• The email you log in with, which matters more than ever now that usernames no longer work for signing in.

Spotify Username vs Display Name

The two names do different jobs. Spotify’s username and display name help page says your username “is designed to identify you on Spotify, and you don’t need it to log in.” Your display name “replaces the username where it shows on your profile, app, and playlists.” Spotify’s community FAQ adds Friend Activity to that list, so friends who follow your listening also see the display name rather than the ID.

The display name is purely a label for people. You can’t log in with it, and changing it doesn’t touch anything else in your account. That is the opposite of Instagram, where you can change your Instagram handle and your name separately, so it’s easy to expect the same freedom here.

Why Your Username Looks Like Random Letters

For several years now, new Spotify accounts have received an automatically generated ID instead of a username the owner picked. It usually looks like a long jumble of lowercase letters and numbers. Spotify’s community team says the same applies if you created the account through Facebook, so signing up that way doesn’t get you a nicer username.

Older accounts may still carry a username the owner typed in years ago. Either way, it can’t be edited, renamed or swapped.

How To Change Your Spotify Display Name

The steps below follow Spotify’s current help pages. The menus look slightly different between phones and computers, but the change syncs to every device signed in to the same account.

On iPhone and Android

• Open Spotify and tap your profile picture at the top of the screen.
• Tap View profile.
• Tap Edit.
• Tap your display name and type the new one.
• Tap Save.

The same edit screen lets you change your profile picture, so it’s worth updating both at once if you’re refreshing the whole profile. If you don’t see a display name at all, the account simply never had one, and you can add one here in the same way.

On Desktop and the Web Player

• Click your profile picture at the top and select Profile.
• Click your current name.
• Type the new display name in the Profile details box.
• Click Save.

This works the same in the desktop app and in the web player on open.spotify.com. Clicking your picture in the same box lets you upload a new photo or remove the current one.

Display Name Rules Worth Knowing

A display name can be up to 30 characters long, and Spotify’s community FAQ says you can change it as many times as you want. There is no cooldown to wait out, so you can try a name, see how it looks on your profile and change it again. Spaces, capital letters and your real name all work, so pick something friends will recognise on a shared playlist or in Friend Activity.

Remember that the display name can’t be used to log in, however often you change it. If your account is connected to Facebook, Spotify can show your Facebook name instead. The help page says a Spotify display name you add yourself shows in its place, so adding one is the simplest way to stop your Facebook name appearing.

How To Find Your Spotify Username

You’ll rarely need the username, but support requests and some third-party tools ask for your Spotify ID. There are two quick ways to find it.

• From your account page. Log in to your Spotify account page in a browser and open the profile or personal info section. Your username sits there next to the email address on the account.
• From a profile link. Open your profile, tap or click the three-dot menu and copy the link to your profile. Paste it somewhere, and the part after “user/” and before “?si=” is your username.

If the link shows a readable word, you have an older, chosen username. If it shows a long string of characters, that string is your generated ID, and it will stay the same for the life of the account.

Spotify Stopped Username Logins on 1 September 2026

Until recently, some long-time users signed in by typing their username and password. That route has now closed. Spotify’s Changing how you log into Spotify page says that after 1 September 2026 you’ll be able to log in “with your email address, not your username,” and that “Your music, playlists, and everything else stays the same.”

If you already sign in with your email address, or with Facebook, Google or Apple, nothing changes for you. The only people affected are those who were still logging in with a username.

If You Can’t Log In Now

If you are still signed in on any device or browser, open your account page and check Edit personal info. Make sure the email address there is one you can open, and update it if it isn’t. If the account has no email at all, go to Edit login methods and add one, as Spotify’s login methods page explains.

If you’re locked out everywhere, use Spotify’s password reset and try every email address you might have used, because the reset email only goes to an address registered to an account. Also try the other sign-up routes, such as Google, Apple or your phone number. If none of them finds the account, contact Spotify through its support page and explain that you used to log in with a username.

Questions About Changing Your Spotify Username

Can I get a new username by making a new account?
Not a username you choose. A new account gets another automatically generated ID, so you’d swap one random string for a different one. It also starts empty, which means rebuilding your playlists, saved songs and follows yourself.

Can I change my Spotify profile link?
No. The profile link is built from your username, so it stays fixed as long as the account exists. When someone opens the link, though, they see your display name and photo rather than the ID, so a clear display name is what makes a shared link look personal.

Why do friends still see my old display name?
Your own profile usually shows the new name as soon as you save, but other people’s apps can keep showing the old name for a while. Ask them to refresh the profile or restart the app, and try logging out and back in yourself. If the old name was your Facebook name, check that you saved a Spotify display name, because that is what replaces it.

You can choose which playlists appear on your profile from each playlist’s menu. Under Settings and privacy, then Privacy and social, you can also decide whether your followers, listening activity and recently played artists are visible.
